It was a quiet affair: just her godmother\u2014photographer and fellow convert Mathea B\u00e5dst\u00f8\u2014and a few others gathered in the recently-completed St. Torfinn\u2019s chapel in Hamar, on the shores of Lake Mj\u00f8sa in eastern Norway. The next day, the Feast of All Souls, Undset received her First Communion in the same chapel, alongside two other village children\u2014an experience she described as \u201clike being in Paradise.\u201d &#8230;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">&#8230; the date of her entrance into the Church, the Feast of All Saints, must have held profound significance for her. The recognition of a host of hidden \u201cfriends,\u201d which Undset had absorbed from her vast and sympathetic reading of medieval literature, comes through on nearly every page of her masterful trilogy, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Kristin-Lavransdatter-Penguin-Classics-Deluxe\/dp\/0143039164\/?tag=firstthings20-20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kristin Lavransdatter<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">. Completed before her conversion, the saga introduces us to a number of Norway\u2019s heavenly intercessors: St. Sunniva, St. Hallvard, and, most significantly, Norway\u2019s patron saint, the great St. Olav Haraldsson,\u00a0<\/span>Rex\u00a0Perpetuus Norvegi\u00e6<span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">.
