USA’s katolske biskoper har nylig offentliggjort et brev der de kristiserer Amnestys nye st\u00f8tte for abort – og h\u00e5per at Amnesty International (AI) vil ombestemme seg p\u00e5 sitt neste r\u00e5dsm\u00f8te i august. Det mest interessante i brevet syns jeg er at: AI’s argumentasjon om at deres hoved\/ eneste poeng har v\u00e6rt at fattige\/ svake kvinner ikke skal rettsforf\u00f8lges om de tar abort, rives i stykker. Det er nemlig lang tid siden Den katolske kirke og de fleste land i verden har \u00f8nsket \u00e5 straffe slike kvinner. Og i praksis har AI i noen land allerede g\u00e5tt ut og aktivt st\u00f8ttet fri abort. Slik skriver biskopene bl.a.:<\/p>\n
\u201cWhile the proposed action by Amnesty International may appear to some to support women\u2019s freedom or provide a compassionate response to women in difficult situations of pregnancy, abortion injures the health and dignity of women at the same time that it ends the life of the unborn child,\u201d Bishop Skylstad added. \u201cA far more compassionate response is to provide support and services for pregnant women, advance their educational and economic standing in society, and resist all forms of violence and stigmatization against them. The Catholic Church provides these services to many women around the world and commits itself to continuing to do so.<\/p>\n \u201cBased on this commitment to women, the Church does not object to AI\u2019s stand against criminal penalties for women who have undergone abortion. In fact, the Catholic Church has long held that these women need compassion and healing, not punishment. However, AI\u2019s policy also exempts abortion practitioners from meaningful penalties and thereby trivializes the harm done by abortion. AI\u2019s new policy appears to apply to every stage of pregnancy and has already led AI-USA to oppose laws against the killing of partially-delivered children.
