\nPave Benedikt er n\u00e5 i \u00d8sterrike p\u00e5 tredje dagen og n\u00e5 (s\u00f8ndag formiddag) skal han feire messe i Stefansdomen i Wien. P\u00e5 denne adressen<\/a> kan man lese om mye av det han har gjort og bl.a. se bilder av en stor utend\u00f8rs messe i Mariazell i g\u00e5r – i p\u00f8sende regnv\u00e6r. (Det er f\u00f8rste gang jeg ser bilder av biskoper med (plast)regnbeskyttelse over sine liturgiske kl\u00e6r.) Det andre bildet viser paven i b\u00f8nn foran den ber\u00f8mte mariastatuen i Mariazell.<\/p>\n

Jeg tar likevel bare med det paven sa under vesperen l\u00f8rdag, retta til prester og ordensfolk. Der snakka han om the three \u201cevangelical counsels\u201d of poverty, chastity and obedience.<\/p>\n

\u201cJesus is concretely present to us only in his Body, the Church,\u201d the pope said, paraphrasing the early 20th century theologian Romano Guardini. \u201cAs a result, obedience to God\u2019s will, obedience to Jesus Christ, must be, really and practically, humble obedience to the church.\u201d<\/p>\n

Benedict argued that this obedience does not restrict human liberty, but allows people \u201cto discover their deepest identity and interior freedom.\u201d It\u2019s an especially important bit of testimony, he said, in a world that craves \u201cself-realization\u201d and \u201cself-determination.\u201d<\/p>\n

Benedict said that the promise of poverty taken by men and women consecrated to God\u2019s service implies a special closeness to the poor of the world. \u201cFor all Christians, but especially for priests and religious, both as individuals and in community, the issue of poverty and the poor must be the object of a constant and serious examination of conscience,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

In a departure from his prepared text, the pope added that this is a special challenge for priests and religious because, by the standards of the truly poor, they live a relatively comfortable life.<\/p>\n

Turning to chastity, Benedict offered a strong defense of priestly celibacy as a way of putting oneself \u201ccompletely and unreservedly at the service of God\u2019s Kingdom.\u201d Celibacy does not mean being \u201caloof from interpersonal relationships,\u201d the pope said, but rather the capacity to \u201copen up a space\u201d for God\u2019s presence in a me-first world.<\/p>\n
