Cardinal accused of disobeying Pope<\/b><\/p>\n

THE HEAD of the Vatican\u2019s Ecclesia Dei commission has reprimanded the Archbishop of Manila, Cardinal Gaudencio Rosales, for setting \u201cunduly restrictive\u201d conditions on use of the Tridentine Mass, saying they were \u201cin direct contradiction\u201d to the wishes of Pope Benedict XVI.<\/p>\n

\u201cYour \u2018Archdiocesan Guidelines\u2019 are simply not acceptable as they stand and I ask you to reconsider them,\u201d said the Ecclesia Dei president, Cardinal Dar\u00edo Castrill\u00f3n Hoyos, in a letter dated 6 March and seen by The Tablet this week. It said \u201cguidelines allowing only a monthly Mass in a chapel of [the] Metropolitan Cathedral\u201d were in violation of the norms established in the motu proprio, \u201cSummorum Pontificum\u201d, issued by the Pope in 2007 for the widespread use of the Tridentine Mass. Cardinal Castrill\u00f3n said the papal decree was \u201cpart of the universal law of the Church\u201d and could not be limited by the \u201cparticular law\u201d of a diocesan bishop. The Archdiocese of Manila ministers to more than 2.8 million Catholics.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is simply no legitimate reason why this [Tridentine] Mass cannot and should not be celebrated in any church or chapel of your archdiocese,\u201d Cardinal Castrill\u00f3n said in his letter to the Archbishop of Manila.<\/p>\n

He insisted that Cardinal Rosales actively promote the implementation of the motu proprio by \u201chelping priests who are desirous to learn how to celebrate\u201d the old rite Mass, which he said only required that the priest be \u201creasonably competent in Latin\u201d, who wished to assist at its celebration. The Archdiocese of Manila published the Tridentine Mass guidelines on its website last year.
