Presidenten skal ogs\u00e5 motta en \u00e6resdoktergrad fra universitetet. Problemet med dette er at den amerikanske bispesynoden sv\u00e6rt tydelig har sagt fra at katolske institusjoner ikke b\u00f8r \u00e6re noen som handler diekte imot katolsk morall\u00e6re &#8211; og det gj\u00f8r Obama sv\u00e6rt tydelig mht abortsp\u00f8rsm\u00e5let.<\/p>\n<p>Mange katolske biskoper og kardinaler har kritisert det som holder p\u00e5 \u00e5 skje, men s\u00e5 langt har universitetet ikke b\u00f8yd av. Amerikanske katolikker har diskutert dette i flere m\u00e5neder og til og med begynt \u00e5 kalle universitetet for &laquo;notre shame&raquo;. I g\u00e5r ble problemene enda st\u00f8rre for universitet, da det ble kjent at USA&#8217;s kanskje mest kjente og respekterte, kvinnelige katolikk, Mary Ann Glendon, som ogs\u00e5 skulle delta p\u00e5 denne &laquo;graduation ceremony&raquo;, har trukket seg. Glendon var jusprofessor ver Harvard, hun ble sv\u00e6rt mye brukt av pave Johannes Paul, og var fra 2007-09 USA&#8217;s ambassad\u00f8r i Vatikanet.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.firstthings.com\/blog\/2009\/04\/27\/declining-notre-dame-a-letter-from-mary-ann-glendon\/\">Slik skriver Mary Ann Glendon<\/a> bl.a.:<\/p>\n<p><i><font color=\"#333399\">&#8230; &#8230; First, as a longtime consultant to the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, I could not help but be dismayed by the news that Notre Dame also planned to award the president an honorary degree. This, as you must know, was in disregard of the U.S. bishops\u2019 express request of 2004 that Catholic institutions \u201cshould not honor those who act in defiance of our fundamental moral principles\u201d and that such persons \u201cshould not be given awards, honors or platforms which would suggest support for their actions.\u201d That request, which in no way seeks to control or interfere with an institution\u2019s freedom to invite and engage in serious debate with whomever it wishes, seems to me so reasonable that I am at a loss to understand why a Catholic university should disrespect it.<\/p>\n<p>Then I learned that \u201ctalking points\u201d issued by Notre Dame in response to widespread criticism of its decision included two statements implying that my acceptance speech would somehow balance the event &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;  It is with great sadness, therefore, that I have concluded that I cannot accept the Laetare Medal or participate in the May 17 graduation ceremony.<\/p>\n<p>In order to avoid the inevitable speculation about the reasons for my decision, I will release this letter to the press, but I do not plan to make any further comment on the matter at this time.<\/font><\/i><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>USA&#8217;s mest kjente katolske universitet, Notre Dame, i Notre Dame, Illinois, har invitert president Obama til \u00e5 kaste glans over semesterets store h\u00f8ytidelighet, n\u00e5r vitnem\u00e5lene utdeles til studentene, s\u00f8ndag 17. mai.
