Hvordan skal man best forstå Det andre Vatikankonsil?

For nesten et år siden ble det kjent at det var skrevet ei ny bok om Det andre Vatikankonsil, av erkebiskop Agostino Marchetto, og NLM-bloggen skriver nå at den er i ferd med å komme ut på engelsk: Den kommer ut i ferbuar 2010, er på 705 sider og koster 40 USD. Tittelen er: «The Second Vatican Ecumenical Council: A Counterpoint for the History of the Council», og den kan allerede forhåndsbestilles på britiske Amazon (og jeg har nettopp gjort det).

In his book, Marchetto critiques the so-called «Bologna School» which he says has done well in «monopolizing and imposing one interpretation» of the Second Vatican Council, presenting it as a kind of «Copernican revolution, the passing to… another Catholicism». He further critiques their interpretation of the Council as an event or «spirit», rather than looking at the Council through the lens of its actual documents. It is within this historical context that Marchetto argues for the hermeneutic of continuity, or reform in continuity, and against the hermeneutic of rupture. …

Vatican II was colossal. The official proceedings alone fill 62 large volumes that provide a solid foundation for a correct assessment and interpretation. But many began to weave their interpretive web before the publication of the indispensable proceedings issued by the council’s ruling bodies, basing themselves instead upon private writings (personal diaries), contemporary newspaper reports and columns, although these were sometimes exceptional. I think, for example, of those of P. Caprile.

This already brings into question their judgment, their crosswise criticism, because even a superficial reading reveals discrepancies and a variety of attributions and «merits» (for some positions that in the end were «victorious»), an incomplete understanding with respect to the complexity of synodal affairs (a canvas of regulations, «pressure,» movements, «battles» against «conservatism» or the curia, or in defense of tradition or of the avant-garde, the teaching of the Magisterium, or pastoral-ecumenical interpretations of John XXIII). … …
