President Obama bøyde seg for massiv kritikk fra katolske biskoper

For et par uker siden ble det kjent at alle religiøse (katolske) institusjoner – sykehus, skoler, universiteter osv – måtte tilby sykeforsikring til sine ansatte, som også inkluderte prevensjon (også abortfremkallende prevensjon). De fikk ett år på seg til å følge opp dette, ingen ankemulighet, og enorme bøter hvis de ikke gjorde som staten sa. De ble det ganske enormt opprør blant katolikker, som bl.a. Father Z. skriver om:

If we look at how the American episcopate has been changing in the last 10-15 years, I think we can take heart. But we still need to pray for our bishops. And pray relentlessly. Consider how at the time of the Notre Shame debacle, 80+ bishops protested that cringing bit of pandering to the most aggressively pro-abortion president we have ever seen. 5 years before, the number of bishops in protest would have been unthinkable. Today there are even more bishops reacting and the count is not complete.

In any event, at the time of this writing, 171 US Bishops have been reported to have reacted with strength against Pres. Obama’s determination to force Catholics to violate their consciences in a way that contradicts our Catholic Faith and the clear moral teachings of Holy Church. Amish and Quakers get waivers from some federal mandates. Not Catholics. ….

…. Of the 183 dioceses (by my count) in the U.S. who have a bishop currently serving as its head, 169 of them have issued statements. So 92% of bishops who head dioceses have spoken out against the Obama/HHS mandate.

I kveld leser jeg at president Obama har bøyd av for dette presset:

The White House has announced modified plans to require all women to have access to contraception, attempting to stem anger from Catholic leaders. … Catholic leaders have been angered by the new rule, which required Church-linked institutions to offer health insurance including birth control. But the White House changed the scheme to allow health insurers to provide cover directly if employers object.

Korherrene på Long Island vil feire både den nye og den gamle messen

Jeg fant i går på NLM-bloggen en artikkel som omhandler muligheten for å oppleve begge former av messen (skrevet av en person som egentlig ikke kjenner den gamle messen), og syntes det var interessant å finne to av mine venner omtalt:

I visited the Canonry of St. Leopold in Long Island, New York to talk to them about these developments. They are a new foundation of the Canons Regular of St. Augustine, a very old order in Europe. Their Prior, Fr. Daniel Nash, said, “We give everyone a little bit of everything. We want to open the treasury of the Church, so people get everything that is theirs….not just what has been on the common market for the past 40 years.” Fr. Elias Carr said that it should be “normal” for both Masses to be available, and believes that when the Pope’s words are really heard, this is the direction we’re being led in.

Jeg kjenner dom Elias best av disse to, siden jeg var sammen med ham to år i Bergen, mens dom Daniel møtte jeg flere ganger da jeg var på besøk i Klosterneuburg i 2007. De to andre korherrene på Long Island kjenner jeg også; dom Bruno (ett år i Bergen) og dom Gabriel. Vi skal besøke dem noen dager i juni, og da vil jeg nok finne ut om de allerede har begynt å feire den gamle messen – eller om de bare snakker pent om den.

Den norske katolske salmeboken er god på mange måter, men den savner fullstendig messens proprium (inngangsvers osv.) på norsk, tonsatt med tradisjonelle melodier. Kanskje noen kan ta på seg å lage og samle slikt materiale? (For å synge salmer til inngang osv. er jo ikke første og beste alternativ, heller ikke i den nye messen. Og å synge disse stykke på latin kan man vel ikke gjøre så veldig ofte i norske messer.)

Jeg skrev litt før jul at bloggen Rorate Cæli hadde slettet et helt innlegg og alle kommentarene pga altfor mange hatske kommentarer. Men de har likevel ikke blitt kvitt kommentarproblemene, og skrev i et nytt innlegg i går:

I am a traditional priest who has said only the old Mass for over 20 years. I consider this site to be the best news and most balanced presentation in what we fondly call «Traditon». There are two sides though. The posts bear the news which is reliable … The darker side of Rorate lives in the comments section. Some comments are simply too shameful for open Catholic participation; it is an area that is certainly not safe. We are responsible for everything we write. I fear for the writers of those comments and I fear for the readers even more.

… Some months ago I was sincerely sorry to hear several traditionalists say: «I don’t go to Rorate Caeli anymore». Reasons: the tone of bitterness and insufficient support of the Holy Father when he made an appointment or decision we didn’t understand.

I look to Rorate for the news. It is the only Internet site that I go to regularly that is why I was so sorry to learn that friends had stopped reading it. I find it too difficult to find my way around Fr.Z’s good blog so I wait for someone to tell me anything newsworthy form there. I found when it began and stay with it. I will sing an Alleluia even during Lent if the site loses its bitterness and shows greater support for our common Father.

Ber paven tillate kommunion bare direkte på tungen

Your Holiness,

We are convinced of the great spiritual harm inflicted on the Catholic faithful, and the profanation of the Blessed Sacrament that often occurs by the practice of Communion received on the hand.

We implore Your Holiness to personally intervene to restore once again the normative practice of reception of Holy Communion on the tongue alone.

Jeg ser at det mulig å motta kommunion i hånden på en verdig måte, men altfor ofte er kommunionsutdelingen i våre menigheter for dårlig. Og siden denne forespørselen til pave Benedikt ble anbefalt av en presteblogger jeg stoler på, og på alle måter ser ut til foregå på en god måte, valgte jeg å undertegne.

Den neokatekumenale vei

Denne gruppen fins ikke i Norge (så langt jeg vet), men deres fokus er å bringe tilbake til Kirken og troen mennesker som er kommet skikkelig på avstand; som er blitt forvirret av vår moderne tid. I sitt arbeid har de også lagt vekt på utradisjonelle metoder, og spesielt måten de feirer messene på har blitt diskutert veldig mye.

For en ukes tid siden gikk ryktene om at Vatikanet ville godkjenne deres messefeiring (som har fått svært mye kritikk tidligere), men så skjedde ikke; de fikk derimot godkjent noen riter de bruker når de leder mennesker tilbake til Kirken. Sandro Magister skrev for noen dager siden sterkt kritisk om deres messefeiring, og nå nylig har en prest som lenge har vært en «neocat» forsvart deres messefeiring – som har et veldig fokus på måltidsfelleskapet (og de som kjenner meg, vil forstå at jeg ikke er særlig begeistret). I dag blir flere prester og ca 40 medlemmer av en tidligere anglikansk menighet i Maryland tatt opp i Den katolske Kirke – og for et flott alter de har!

Cardinal-designate Edwin F. O’Brien, apostolic administrator of the Archdiocese of Baltimore, announced Jan. 19 that Mount Calvary Church, a Baltimore parish of the Episcopal Diocese of Maryland, will be received into full communion with the Roman Catholic Church through the newly created Anglican Ordinariate for the United States.

Father Jason Catania, Mount Calvary’s pastor, informed the archdiocese that it has reached an agreement with the Episcopal Diocese of Maryland, effectively ending the parish’s 169-year history with the Anglican Church. In October 2010, the parish’s vestry unanimously voted to leave the Episcopal Church and to become an Anglican-use Catholic parish. …..

Mount Calvary is expected to be the first Anglican-use community in the United States to enter the Catholic Church through the new Anglican Ordinariate since it was announced Jan. 1. The head of the new ordinariate, Father Jeffrey N. Steenson, will receive Father Catania, three fellow priests and 40 parishioners on Jan. 22 at Mount Calvary.

Det engelske Ordinariatet er ett år

For ikke lenge siden feriet det engelsk ordinariatet ett år (se bildet med msgr. Newton over), og man begynner å diskutere i stadig større grad hvordan det går med dem. I alle fall skriver William Oddie i The Catholic Herald at han begynner å lure på hvor vennlige de engelske katolske biskopene egentlig er til dette pavelige initiativet. Jeg vet ikke selv hva jeg skal mene om dette så langt – og det er også mange kommentarer etter Oddies innlegg, les det gjerne selv:

I am beginning to put two and two together and not making four; or, to vary the cliché, I am beginning to smell a rat: I refer to the unfolding story of the Ordinariate of Our Lady of Walsingham. Others, I know, have beat me to it in this particular process. But I am a simple soul, I tend to look on the bright side and try to avoid paranoia where I can. I hope I am wrong: but I am, all the same, beginning to wonder if the warm support with which even quite unexpected people in our hierarchy (like Bishop Hollis) greeted the establishment of the ordinariate this time round (you will remember the extreme hostility with which they squashed the same basic idea in the 90s) was really as wholehearted as it seemed at the time: or were they simply saying what they knew the Pope wanted them to say, but without any real belief in the basic idea? Or maybe with the idea, this time, of getting the whole thing under way and then squashing it? …

William Oddie var selv anglikansk prest og sterkt involvert i det som skjedde i 1992, da flere hundre anglikanske prester i England ble katolikker. Han skrev en bok om dette i 1997, «The Roman Option», som jeg leste da den kom ut. Her skriver han at kardinal Hume var vennlig innstilt til alle disse konvertittene, og (med pave Johannes Pauls og Ratzingers støtte) gjerne vil gi dem muligheten til å konvertere kollektivt til en viss grad, og til å beholde deler av sin anglikanske tradisjon – men at dette brutalt ble stoppet av de andre katolske biskopene i England.

Den hellige pave Marcellus I

Marcellus of Rome was Pope from the reign of Constantius and Galerius to that of Maxentius. At his suggestion the Roman lady Lucina willed her property to God’s Church. Because the number of the faithful in the city had increased, he set up new parishes and divided the City into various districts. This angered Maxentius and he threatened Marcellus with heavy punishments unless he would abandon his pontificate and sacrifice to idols. The Pope resisted steadfastly, and so Maxentius had him sent to the stable to take care of the beasts fed at the public expense. Marcellus spent nine months there, and since he could not be present in his parishes in person, he visited them by his letters. He was rescued from this place by some clerics and given hospitality by Lucina in whose he dedicated a church where he preached to the faithful. Then Maxentius ordered the beasts moved from the stable to the church, so that Marcellus again had to take care of them. The foul atmosphere of the beasts and his hardships soon proved fatal to Marcellus. He died in the Lord, and was buried bf In the cemetery of Priscilla on the Salarian Way, on January 16.

Mange flere gifte katolske prester i USA

Jeg leste nettopp en artikkel om gifte katolske prester i USA. Over 70 slike er intervjuet til en bok som snart kommer ut, og om noen måneder vil USA få ca 100 nye gifte katolske prester – siden Ordinariatet for tidligere anglikanere nå starter opp der. (Jeg tror forøvrig tallet på gifte prester i USA i dag (ca 80) er satt for lavt, og at det er forvirrende å knytte dette til «the Pastoral Provision» som pave Johannes Paul innførte for anglikanere i 1980 – siden det var pave Pius XII som tillot den første gifte mannen (en tidligere luthersk prest i Tyskland) å bli ordinert allerede i 1950.) Artikkelen svarer bl.a. på spørsmålene om gifte prester arbeider mer eller mindre enn de ugifte, om de kan administrere menigheter og om de ugifte prestene er misunnelige:

… there is the practical belief that “if a man’s not married, he’s able to devote himself more fully and exclusively to his parish.” But he has found that married priests are usually aided, not hindered, by their wives, who are very committed to the parish. And he adds that celibate priests can be less accessible than married priests.

“The truth is that celibate priests often have ways of walling themselves off,” Father Sullins says. “If you call a celibate priest’s rectory in the middle of the night, you’ll likely get an answering machine. But if you call a married priest in the middle of the night, and he is disinclined to go out, he will get an elbow from his life partner, saying, ‘Hey, you committed yourself to this work.’

“I don’t want to say the difference is great, but if there is a difference, it’s in favor of the married priest.”

Since 1980, the Roman Catholic Church has shown a preference for celibate clergymen by preventing married priests from being pastors of parishes, unless circumstances dictated it. The priests entering the church as part of the new ordinariate for former Episcopalians will be exceptions to that rule. And because of a shortage of priests in the United States, circumstances have already put married priests in charge of parishes.

… (AND) … I found no evidence that celibate priests resent their married colleagues. Although a small number of theologians and canon lawyers have been critical of the 1980 Pastoral Provision, it seems that working priests are not troubled.

Even Father Newman, for example, who believes celibacy is an important countercultural statement — a celibate priest “has staked his life on the premise that this life is not all there is, and he is putting his flesh on the line” — says the church can accommodate exceptions. Referring to another married priest he knew in South Carolina, Father Newman said, “there was an intuitive grasp among everybody that this was an exception to the norm, and there was no injustice being done to lifelong Catholics who became priests knowing celibacy was part of that.”

En prest om den nye engelske oversettelsen av messen

I et innlegg på Rorate Cæli klager skribenten over at en requiemmesse for hans tante ikke ble noen skikkelig requiem fordi prestene han kjenner gjorde begravelsen til en takkemesse for hennes liv (slik de visst pleier å gjøre) heller enn til en bønn for hennes sjel – som rubrikkene også til novus ordo messen sier at man skal gjøre. Og den nye engelske oversettelsen av messen førte ikke til noen forbedringer.

Jeg undrer meg også noen ganger over at prester fokuserer så lite på bønnen for den avdøde i en katolsk begravelse, og det var vel ikke å vente at den nye engelske oversettelsen av messen kunne føre til umiddelbare og dramatiske forandringer – selv om jeg selv har oppdaget at 1. eukaristiske bønn har blitt svært mye mer tydelig, og betraktelig bedre enn den norske oversettelsen (om jeg får tid skal jeg sammenligne den engelske og norske oversettelsen). Men i dee mange kommentarene (og som vanlig på Rorate Cæli av varierende kvalitet) til innlegget, er det én kommentar fra en nyordinert prest som jeg gjerne vil at flere leser:

Yes, the new translation will not fix the way the new Mass is said in most places. Yes, there are problems even in the Latin. However, as a recently ordained diocesan priest, I have to say that the new translation is not nothing. It may be nothing in terms of forcing an real end to the liturgical debacle. However, at our parish’s small daily Masses, where we never have extraordinary ministers, where I rarely look up toward the people outside of the homily, where nothing is sung except the hymn I pick for the recessional, and at which I use the Roman Canon daily, omit the general intercessions, and always use the Confiteor and the entrance and communion antiphons, it has made a difference to me.

You are right, it has not changed the way I say Mass. I used the same «options» with the old translation. You are right, it is still the Novus Ordo with all the issues that that entails. However, I have found that sacrificial language of the new translation of the Roman Canon very edifying. I am able to say each day and my parishioners hear at each of my Masses, «and bless these gifts, these offerings the holy and unblemished sacrifices,» «bless, acknowledge and approve this offering in every respect,» «accept this oblation of our service,» «we…offer to your glorious majesty…this pure victim, this holy victim, this spotless victim, the holy Bread of eternal life and the Chalice of everlasting salvation; Be pleased to look upon these offerings with a serene and kindly countenance and accept them…and the offering of your high priest Melchizedek, a holy sacrifice, a spotless victim.» In addition, the orations are translated far more accurately. I have many times found orations which are identical to those found in the TLM. With the new translation it is much easier to preach on these texts. The old translation mangled them so badly that even where the Novus Ordo made us of traditional orations, the translation made them unrecognizable and often altered their theology.

So no, the new translation will not fix our liturgical crisis. Yes, most people will find the mess at their parishes to be more or less the same. However, the new translation is still not nothing. I became a diocesan priest, rather than joining the FSSP or another community (which I seriously considered), because I believe that this is where God is asking me to be. Being where I am, I have found the new translation to be a real help in making that best of a bizarre historical situation.

Ordinariatet opprettet i USA

1. januar (ett år etter England) ble ordinariatet for tidligere anglikanere (episkopale) opprettet i USA: The Personal Ordinariate of the Chair of Saint Peter. Og allerede nå er de større i USA enn de er blitt i England; 100 prester, 14000 troende, og de har allerede en (dom)kirke i Houston.

Fr. Jeffrey N. Steenson er blitt utnevnt til ‘ordinary’, og han vil nok få 95 % av bisperettighetene (som i England), men ikke bli bispeviet, siden har er gift, 59 år gammel med tre voksne barn. Han er allerede (for noen få år siden) blitt katolsk prest, og og var tidligere episkopal biskop.

God og dårlig kirkemusikk

When thinking and writing about music appropriate for liturgical worship I have always gone back to what the late Church musician Msgr. Richard Schuler correctly asserted: since sacred liturgical music is NOT an add-on in worship, since it is actually an integrating part (pars integrans) of liturgical worship, since it is prayer, liturgical music must be both sacred and also art.

The texts must be sacred texts. The idiom must be a sacred idiom, or at least not opposed to the sacred. The music must be good, that is, well-composed, of high artistic value. It must be performed well.

Mer om SSPX

Jeg skrev i går litt om SSPX – les om dem på Wikepedia på engelsk og norsk. Father Z. skrev om dem i januar 2009; om hva opphevelsen av ekskommunikasjonen av de fire biskopene betydde den gangen (egentlig bare at da ble det lagt til rette for at en forsoning skulle kunne skje), og om man kan delta i SSPX’ arbeid. Father Z. er ofte ganske skarp mot SSPX, men her syns jeg han skriver ganske vennlig – og jeg tar med en del av hans synspunkter:

I am seeing a lot of confusion in the wake of the lifting of the excommunications of the bishops of the SSPX. Let’s get some things clear. VERY LITTLE HAS CHANGED JURIDICALLY except in the status of those four bishops.

I hope that this has helped to change the «atmosphere» surrounding these problems. The «lifting» of the excommunications is a first step in the long process that still remains.

Q: Is the SSPX now legitimate?
Not in a juridical sense, no. The SSPX still does not have the approval of the Pope or of a diocesan bishop. It is still a separated group, though these days many prefer not to speak of «schism».

Q: Are the chapels of the SSPX okay now?
Not in a juridical, legal sense, no. Many good things can happen in one of those communities, but the SSPX chapels are not, because of the lifting of the excommunications, suddenly made legitimate. They are not reconciled by this move.

Q: Are the priests of the SSPX in good standing now?
Not yet they aren’t. The priests of the SSPX are still suspended a divinis. They say Mass validly, but without the permission of the Church, either from a faculty of the Holy See or the local bishop. They do not have the necessary faculties to hear confessions and give sacramental absolution except in danger of death.

Q: Is it okay to go to chapels of the SSPX for Mass?
Yes and no. It is still not «okay» to go to chapels of the SSPX if you are doing so out of contempt for the Holy See or Holy Father, etc. If are are deeply attached to the older form of Mass, and it is very hard on you to go without it, yes, you can attend these Masses out of devotion. You can fulfill your Sunday obligation still, because the 1983 Code of Canon Laws says you do.

But the fact remains that these are still chapels separated from unity with the local bishop. In my opinion, it is not a good idea to go to these chapels … except perhaps in very rare circumstances wherein there really is no acceptable alternative. …. I don’t think it is a good idea to frequent and receive Communion often in the chapels of the SSPX. I think that undermines a person’s sense of unity with the Holy Father and the local bishop.

…. So… folks… don’t get it into your head that all the problems with the SSPX have suddenly been removed. Nothing has changed about their status. What changed was the status of the four bishops: they are no longer excommunicated, but they are still in a state of separation from clear and manifest unity with the Holy Father.

SSPX i Norge

Ikke lenge før jul hørte jeg at SSPX har mer arbeid i Norge enn jeg tidligere kjente til, også i Oslo, og at til og med mennesker jeg kjenner går i disse «Pius-messene». Det kom som et stort sjokk og en enorm skuffelse på meg.

Jeg ser det selv (selvsagt) som helt uaktuelt å ha noe samarbeid med SSPX, siden de jo står i et aktivt ulydighetsforhold til Den katolske Kirke, til paven og til den lokale biskop. Alle deres biskoper og prester er suspenderte a divinis og alt de gjør er uten tillatelse, dvs. forbudt

Jeg vil også legge til at dette skader arbeidet jeg og andre prester gjør for å gi tradisjonen (liturgisk og på andre måter) større plass i Kirken i vår tid og i vårt land. Noen katolikker som føler en viss tiltrekning til SSPX vil kanskje være uenig i en slik vurdering, men sett fra en katolsk prests synsvinkel er det opplagt slik. Spør oss gjerne hva vi syns.

Vennlig holdning til den tradisjonelle latinske messen i Stockholm

I forgårs lot den svenske katolske biskopen, Anders Arborelius, offentliggjøre et dokument som beskriver den tradisjonelle latinske messen, den siste utviklingen (fra 2007) om hvordan denne messen kan feires, og hvordan bruken av denne messen nå nylig er blitt utvidet i Stockholm og Lund. Her er siste del av dokumentet:

År 2007 utfärdade Benedikt XVI genom sitt apostoliska brev Summorum Pontificum nya bestämmelser för den äldre liturgin. I Summorum Pontificum klargörs att det numera inom Katolska kyrkans romerska rit finns två olika liturgiska uttryckssätt. Den liturgi som firas enligt Paulus VI:s missale utgör den ordinarie formen av den romerska riten. Den äldre liturgin utgör den romerska ritens extraordinarie form. Det är inte fråga om två olika riter utan om ett tvåfaldigt bruk av en och samma romerska rit.

Av Summorum Pontificum framgår att i de församlingar där det mera varaktigt finns en grupp av troende som känner sig förbundna med den äldre liturgin, bör kyrkoherden tillmötesgå gruppens förfrågan om att få tillgång till mässor enligt 1962 års Romerska missale. Även stiftets biskop ska verka för att önskemål om mässor enligt den extraordinarie formen tillgodoses. Bestämmelserna i Summorum Pontificum utgör universell kyrklig lag. Hur bestämmelserna ska tillämpas har förklarats närmare i instruktionen Universae Ecclesiae som publicerades av den påvliga kommissionen Ecclesia Dei år 2011.

I dokumenten från Rom förklaras att den romerska liturgin enligt den extraordinarie formen utgör en värdefull skatt som det är viktigt för Kyrkan att bevara. Genom Summorum Pontificum vill Benedikt XVI skänka denna skatt som en gåva till alla troende. Vidare är syftet med Summorum Pontificum att säkerställa att de som så önskar får tillgång till mässor enligt den extraordinarie formen samt att främja Kyrkans enhet.

När det gäller Stockholms katolska stift har präster från Kristus Konungens institut sedan flera år tillbaka besökt stiftet för att fira mässor enligt det äldre bruket. För att bättre kunna tillgodose de önskemål som finns i stiftet om sådana mässor har biskop Anders Arborelius under hösten 2011 beslutat att inbjuda en präst från Kristus Konungens institut, kanik Marcus Künkel, att bosätta sig i Stockholm. Fader Künkel kommer att verka som själasörjare i framför allt Stockholm och Lund för dem som känner sig förbundna med den äldre liturgiska traditionen. (Fader Künkel kommer också att tjänstgöra som sjukhuspräst.) Numera finns det även flera stifts- och ordenspräster på olika orter i stiftet som regelbundet firar den traditionella mässan.
